Grants That We Make

Generally we make grants that directly or indirectly benefit children. We place special emphasis on benefits to childcare and education issues. The Board has also targeted grants to specific needs. For example, the Board has recently funded services targeting homeless children and their families.

We make no grants to individuals.

We make grants only to organizations tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code.

We make no continuing, program grants.

Generally, grants are limited to $5,000 per year

Some examples of grants that we have made:

  • Partial start-up costs for a new childcare facility.
  • Furnace repair costs for a childcare center during the winter.
  • Costs of roof repair, cleanup costs and replacement of furniture damaged by water from a major roof failure.

What are the qualifications for a grant from the Ashbury Children's Foundation?

  • Organizations must be tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. When applying for a grant for the first time, an organization should supply its Federal tax exemption letter along with the request. No grants are made to individuals.
  • Applicant organizations must provide services to children either as primary or secondary recipients.
  • Organizations must provide their services in the San Francisco Bay Area.

How do I make application for a grant?

A grant request should be in the form of a letter of no more than two pages. The letter should describe:

  1. The purpose of the requested grant and how specifically it will benefit children.
  2. The amount of money being requested.
    • If the grant is requested for specific equipment, consulting services, etc. the basis of the cost estimates should be included with the grant request.
    • If the grant will assist with a part of an ongoing program, a simple budget should be provided. The budget line items should be consistent with your organization's program budget.
  3. Do not include extensive information on your overall program unless the Foundation has specifically requested the information.
  4. Grant request should be sent to:

    Ashbury Children's Foundation
    3621 Loma Vista Avenue
    Oakland, CA 94619

What type of grants does the Foundation make?

The foundation usually does not make grants in excess of $5,000 to any organization in a year.

Grants are usually made for one or more of the following:

  1. Small emergency grants.
Examples: Repair of Child Care Center heating system, repair and replacement of Child Care Center equipment due to flood.
  2. Grants to targeted needs. These are Foundation Board focused grants. The current focus is on children in homeless families.
  3. Seed or start up money for innovative programs related to children.
  4. Small projects providing direct benefit to children.
Examples: Purchase of playground equipment and renovation of play structures.

If we receive a grant, what type of reporting is required?

The Foundation tries to keep reporting as simple as possible. Generally we request a brief letter at the end of the grant period describing how the funds were spent and any results the grantee wishes to highlight. If it is a matching grant the Foundation will request a report on the source of funds used to match the grant. There may be times when other reporting requirements are necessary; any additional reporting requirements will be stated clearly in the letter that provides notification of grant approval.
